Burke High School
Omaha Central High School
Although Central High had a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring in double figures: Jessica Lee (12), Sahdia Thomas (11), Day Day Haynes (10), the Eagles couldn’t quite generate enough points to take the lead away from rival Burke.
The game was extremely tight early with two lead changes and one tie in the first quarter. From there Burke, steadily built a double digit lead. The visiting Bulldogs led by as many as 13 points mid-way through the third quarter, however a late Central high surge in the 4th quarter, led by 4 points from Sahdia Thomas, 3 points from Day Day Haynes, and two points apiece from Jessica Lee and Alexis Shade brought the game within six points at 50-44. Central was forced to foul Burke to extend the game. The Bulldogs only made 3 of 6 free-throws on their last possessions, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on their final possessions and fell 53-44.
Also helping the effort for Omaha Central were Jacy Dundee (7 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block) and Alexis Shade (4 points, 7 rebounds). Thomas was a big defensive contributor as well, racking up seven rebounds, one steal and two blocks.
Avery Tilley and Marissa Taylor played extremely well in supporting roles but did not make a contribution in the scoring column.
Omaha Central finished the game with 35 rebounds (14 offensive / 21 defensive), four blocks and two steals. Central also set a season low for turnovers with 7, and a season high for assists with 8.
The Central Varsity (girls) next game is on Saturday (2/11) at Lincoln Southwest at 5:15 with a JV game to follow.
